Proudly serving Ponte Vedra, FL. and Surrounding Areas
Heat Pump Services in Jacksonville & Ponte Vedra
Heat pumps are the backbone of home comfort in Northeast Florida. A single system handles cooling in summer and heating in winter, efficiently, quietly, and without the complexity of running separate AC and furnace units. It’s the reason most new homes in the Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra area are built with heat pumps from day one.
PV Plumbing & Air HVAC provides complete heat pump services: repair, installation, maintenance, and honest guidance on when it makes sense to upgrade. Whether your heat pump is 2 years old or 20, we keep it running at peak performance. Contact us today.

Our Heat Pump Services
Heat Pump Repair
When your heat pump stops heating, stops cooling, or starts doing both poorly, we diagnose the problem fast. Common issues include failed reversing valves, refrigerant leaks, defrost control failures, and compressor problems. We carry the most common parts on our trucks for same-day repair. Heat Pump Installation
Whether you’re replacing an aging system, switching from a furnace, or installing in new construction, we size and install heat pumps using Manual J load calculations. We’ll match the right system to your home’s size, layout, and efficiency goals. Learn more about installation →
Heat Pump Maintenance
Annual maintenance keeps your heat pump efficient, extends its lifespan, and catches small problems before they become expensive repairs. Our tune-ups include refrigerant checks, coil cleaning, electrical testing, and full performance verification. Learn more about maintenance →
How Heat Pumps Work
A heat pump doesn’t generate heat, it moves it. In summer, it extracts heat from inside your home and releases it outside (just like a traditional AC). In winter, it reverses: extracting heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside.
This sounds counterintuitive, pulling heat from cold air?, but it works because even 40°F air contains thermal energy that a heat pump can capture. It’s only when temperatures drop below 25–30°F that heat pump efficiency drops significantly. In Northeast Florida, where winter lows rarely reach that range, heat pumps operate near peak efficiency almost all season.
Key Components
- Outdoor unit, Houses the compressor, outdoor coil, and fan. Sits on a pad outside your home.
- Indoor air handler, Contains the indoor coil and blower that distributes conditioned air through your ductwork.
- Reversing valve, The component that switches the system between heating and cooling modes.
- Refrigerant lines, Copper lines connecting the indoor and outdoor units that carry refrigerant.
- Thermostat, Controls the system and tells it which mode to operate in.
Types of Heat Pumps
Air-Source Heat Pumps (Most Common)
These are the standard heat pumps used in most Northeast Florida homes. They transfer heat between indoor and outdoor air through refrigerant. Available in single-stage, two-stage, and variable-speed configurations.
- Single-stage: Runs at full capacity or off. Most affordable but least efficient.
- Two-stage: Runs at a high or low setting. Better efficiency and humidity control.
- Variable-speed (inverter): Adjusts output continuously to match demand. Best efficiency, quietest operation, and superior humidity control. Premium price point.
Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps
Individual indoor units mounted on walls, each serving a single zone. No ductwork required. Ideal for additions, converted spaces, or homes without existing ducts. More on our ductless mini-split page →
Dual-Fuel (Hybrid) Systems
Pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles moderate cold; the furnace kicks in during the rare deep freeze. Offers maximum efficiency across all temperature ranges.
Why Heat Pumps Are Ideal for Northeast Florida
Year-Round Efficiency
Heat pumps are most efficient in mild climates, exactly what Northeast Florida offers. Your system runs in its optimal range for both heating and cooling nearly all year.
Lower Operating Costs
Heat pumps use electricity to move heat, not generate it. This makes them 2–3 times more efficient than electric resistance heating (like electric furnaces or baseboard heaters). On average, homeowners save 30–50% on heating costs compared to electric furnace systems.
One System, Two Functions
Instead of maintaining a separate AC and furnace, a heat pump does both. That means one system to maintain, one service call for tune-ups, and one set of components to monitor.
Humidity Management
Florida’s humidity is a year-round challenge. Variable-speed heat pumps excel at dehumidification because they run at lower speeds for longer periods, pulling more moisture from the air than traditional systems that cycle on and off.
Environmental Impact
Heat pumps produce no direct emissions (unlike gas furnaces) and use less electricity than resistance heating. If your home has or adds solar panels, a heat pump can run almost entirely on renewable energy.
Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Attention
- Reduced heating or cooling output, rooms aren’t reaching thermostat settings
- Higher energy bills, the system is working harder than it should
- Ice buildup on the outdoor unit, defrost cycle isn’t functioning properly
- System runs constantly without reaching temperature
- Unusual noises, grinding, clicking, or rattling from the outdoor unit
- Frequent cycling, system turns on and off every few minutes
- System is 15+ years old and repairs are becoming more frequent
